Just Add Water

Let's say you have some weeding to do, so you need to keep the kids busy outside for an hour. (Or let's say it's been an embarrassingly long time since you weeded, and you need two hours. That has never happened to me, mind you.)

Of course, the best idea is to have them help you. I have found that inexpensive disposable gloves work well for little helpers, and it's a great learning experience and it is fun to work together. However, I can pretty much guarantee you that your kids won't want to help you for the whole one (or two) hours. In that case, here is something else you can try.

Water Fun

You will need one small waterproof table, one large bucket, and several small buckets, scoops, and cups. Fill the large bucket with water (preferably from your outside faucet, so you don't have to carry it far). Place the bucket and your appropriately-sunscreened little darlings in the vicinity of the table and watch the fun happen! (Disclaimer: Please remember that small children can drown quickly, even in buckets of water, so only do this if you are going to be weeding right near them and can supervise appropriately.)

My kids entertained themselves very happily this way for two (I mean one) hours this morning!

Liberty

IMG_2512

Hello, friends! I have been absent from the blogging world for a good reason. I had the opportunity to take my children (along with my father) on a road trip "up north" to visit my extended family. While we were there, we took a quick side trip to see the Statue of Liberty. My kids were amazed to see this well-known landmark in person, and it was a great opportunity to explain to them what Lady Liberty means to me. I feel very fortunate and thankful to live in a country where I can vote as I wish, worship as I wish, and express my opinions in a public way without fear of retribution. This is something I hope I will never take for granted.

A "Funny Kid Quotes" Twofer

In the car today, Radar and The Princess were discussing their upcoming birthdays:

Radar: "I want to have my birthday party at McDonald's."
The Princess: "Oh, Radar. Birthday parties at McDonald's are soooo late 1970's."

And later this afternoon, Radar made me realize I had the air conditioner turned down a little too much:

Radar: "Mommy, I am cold. I need to change into some long-sleeved pants."

A Few Servings of Sushi

Remember this post? Back in March my friends passed along a bag of really fun fabrics, in which I found a wonderful surprise, 2 yards of an all-time favorite of mine, Munki Sushi. I was looking forward to sewing it up, and finally... I did.

Sushi Dresses Skirt and Top

On the far left is a babydoll-style top which I think wants to be paired with pants or longies as a collab. Next is a skirt which is going to be a part of a beautiful collaborative set at KimberlyR (more info on that as the date gets closer). And finally, two cute embellished sushi dresses; one to stock at my Hyenacart shop tonight and one which is a gift for the daughter of my fabric-gifting friends.

I do still have some of this wonderful fabric left, which I will use at some point, but at the moment, I'd just have to say... I'm stuffed!

Ready for the Fourth

It is completely out of character for me to get anything done this far ahead, but I am done with the kids' Fourth of July shirts. I decided to use a navy and white Stars and Stripes print from Chez Ami. They should be able to enjoy these all summer long. Thanks for looking!

Dress Love

It happens every now and then... I make something that I'm so fond of, it almost seems a shame to try to sell it. And believe me, if I thought I could squeeze The Princess, age 7, into a size 6-12 months, I'd be keeping this one.

I fell in love with this Japanese fabric quite some time ago. The colors, the nice weight of the fabric, the cute hedgehogs, some with polka dots.

As most Japanese fabrics are, it was pricey, so I could only buy a small amount. I sewed most of it up last summer, then tucked away the tiny bit I had left.

Turns out it was just enough to make this sweet little dress, and fall in love all over again.

Now, anyone know where I can get some more??

Little Peanut

"Little Peanut" was my father's nickname for me as a child. And I really was a "little peanut"... always  shorter and smaller than all of my friends. So this fabric made me a bit nostalgic. It is perfect for infant day gowns in both pink and blue!

Validation

Overheard this evening: a conversation between The Princess and my father, in which the Princess declared...

"It is fun having brothers. And it's pretty cool having a Mom who sews because she can, like, make you match and stuff."
